Shows I’m watching + top reader favorites

fair isle sweater cozy petite lounge outfit

Express joggers xxsp (similar), JCF slippers 6, A&F sweater (similar)// Outfit from this post

Back in December I asked you guys to share your current binge-watch obsessions with me in this post. I exported the comments, tallied up the suggestions, and have been making my way through some of them! If you’re looking for a new show to enjoy, below are a few of the most-recommended favorites from our community and my thoughts.

Firstly, a quick note on comfy joggers which are my uniform of choice for curling up on the couch:

  • The ones above are sold out, but Express makes good ones and has an updated pair stocked in petite & regular with great reviews.
  • I also have this pair from Amazon in XS that I’ve enjoyed for a year now. The fit is not perfect as the bottom opening is a little loose around my ankles, but the cropped length is good and fits me like a full length jogger. The material is light-medium weight and smooth against the skin. I wish the ankles were more snug, but nevertheless these have been very comfy for lounging around and even sleeping in!
  • For a cozy versus smooth finish, JCF has a pair starting in xxs with great reviews.
  • For petite active joggers, a ton of you have recommended Athleta but I don’t own any yet personally!

EDIT: Just added a new show below that I started watching (thanks to your suggestions), and am loving so far!

Crash Landing on You

Netflix
I only checked out this Korean series after so many of you mentioned it on a recent IG post, and on day 1 of watching, Nick had to pry me off the couch in the wee hours of the morning! It’s a romantic drama/comedy following a South Korean heiress who crash lands and gets stuck in the drastically different world of North Korea where she of course falls in love. If you aren’t familiar with “K-dramas,” be prepared for some cheesy elements, but I’m only a few episodes in and am already fully invested in the charming story and main characters. This isn’t a good multi-tasking show to have on in the background though (unless you speak Korean) as it’s subtitled.

P.S. I almost didn’t recognize two of the actors from Parasite!

The Morning Show

Apple+
The Morning Show is full of stars – Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrell (although I personally had a hard time un-seeing him as Michael Scott!). The series chronicles a #MeToo scandal at a fictional TV network, with many parallels to the real life Matt Lauer/Today Show saga at NBC. It’s uncomfortable at times given the subject matter, but a very intriguing and overall entertaining watch that had me at the last episode quicker than expected!

Jack Ryan

Amazon Prime
Action/drama isn’t my usual style of show, but this was playing in the background at home and I unexpectedly got sucked in through both seasons. It stars another former The Office actor in a totally different role (Jim Halpert as a…CIA operative?) that worked out quite well, and I quickly became a fan like many of you. Nick says fans of The Wire will also enjoy seeing Wendell Pierce.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Amazon Prime
A lighthearted and easy watch featuring strong female leads, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (so fellow Gilmore Girls fans are likely to enjoy this series as well). Miriam “Midge” Maisel starts out as a mid-century housewife with a textbook “perfect” life, but all that gets uprooted and sends her on an accidental journey of self-discovery through standup comedy. This one is worth watching in my opinion just for the fabulous fashion from the ’50s and ’60s!

Modern Love

Amazon Prime
You don’t have to watch these in order as every episode is about different characters, but they’re all based off real stories of love and relationships from The New York Times column with the same name. Fair warning, these are more complex rather than *feel good* love stories, and although this was a reader favorite, I couldn’t get into the series.

If you like this style of show, I was also introduced to Little America (Apple +) which is a similar anthology style series with each episode focusing on an American immigrant’s journey based off of a real life story. I’ve only watched a few episodes so far and while this won’t make it to my list of favorite shows, I think fellow immigrants may appreciate some of the themes.

The Crown

Netflix
The Crown takes a bit more focus and concentration than some of the other series on this list (probably why we are still slowly working our way through it). It follows Queen Elizabeth II’s life and the politics and drama surrounding the royal family through the decades (it starts in the 1940s will wrap-up with its fifth season portraying their lives in the ’90s and early 2000s). While the accuracy of the show has been debated, the hair, make-up, and costumes definitely bring you back in time are fun to see.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian

Disney+
This was a title that was mentioned by quite a few people, but as I’m not a big Star Wars person, I haven’t watched it yet. Friends love adorable baby Yoda and tell me it’s moderately entertaining even if you’re not a diehard, and it’s family-friendly enough to watch with older children. (P.S. If you have a Verizon plan with unlimited data you can get a free 1 year subscription of Disney+, so it could be worth checking out after watching the Disney classics)

Schitt’s Creek

Past seasons on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, current (and final) season on Pop TV
My favorite on this list, and a true lighthearted, easy watch. The first episode didn’t hook me but it’s worth sticking it out and giving some of the characters a chance (particularly Alexis!). I think most viewers know Eugene Levy created and stars in the show with his son Dan, but I recently found out his daughter Sarah also stars in it as Twyla!

Along the vein of lighthearted Canadian comedies, another favorite is Kim’s Convenience, which admittedly took me several episodes to get into (I thought some of the Asian immigrant aspects were too over the top) but the heart of show and characters won me over. Now we’re just eagerly waiting for the newest season to make it’s way over to Netflix for American fans!
